Caring and Quality Health Care

BOULDER, COLORADO

About Dr. Emily McCort

Welcome. I am a Board Certified Psychiatrist with 30 years of experience working with adults of all ages. My areas of interest and expertise include attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, sleep disorders, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, college mental health, and mood disorders.

I completed my psychiatric training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where I served as Chief Resident of the Outpatient Clinic. I have spent my career leading clinical teams; first working with seriously mentally ill in the public health system; and then spending much of the last decade as the lead psychiatrist at CU Boulder working exclusively with college students. My designations as a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology reflect my significant contributions and commitment to the psychiatric profession but my true passion lies in working with my patients.

My Boulder private practice allows me to bring my years of experience and commitment to collaborative comprehensive care to the private sector. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you.

Getting Started

To request an initial consultation, please call 303.499.0331 and leave a message with your name and telephone number. I will return your call and initiate a brief phone consultation to determine if proceeding with an initial visit makes sense. Initial visits are consultative in nature, and the consultation period may occur over several visits. These visits consist of the collection of comprehensive physical and mental health information, preliminary assessment of the nature of the problem, and recommendation for further testing or treatment. In some circumstances, I may recommend a different treatment provider and/or treatment setting as more suitable for your needs. Once we have mutually agreed to work together, you will become an active patient.

Services

TELEPSYCHIATRY

Video-based telepsychiatry helps meet patients’ needs for convenient and accessible psychiatric services and is available at no additional fee. It brings the care to the patient’s location reducing time away from school or work as well as the potential barriers of transportation, childcare, and stigma. There is substantial evidence for the effectiveness of telepsychiatry and research has found patient satisfaction to be high resulting in recent improvements in insurance reimbursement to patients for this service.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT

The thoughtful use of medication can relieve symptoms allowing patients to more fully engage in their lives and in other strategies such as psychotherapy, mindfulness, and self-care. I prescribe conservatively and work closely with patients assessing for medication efficacy and side effects, establishing minimum effective doses, and minimizing the number of medications needed.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Psychotherapy is the act of talking through thoughts, feelings, moods and behaviors in an effort to make impactful changes in one’s quality of life and functioning. No one specific technique works for everyone. I utilize a patient-centered approach drawing from a variety of interventions including supportive, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and psychodynamic techniques to meet the specific needs of each individual.

GENETIC TESTING

Genetic testing to support medication choices remains controversial within the field of psychiatry. However, this service is offered to interested patients with a history of non-response to or heavy side effect burden from psychiatric medications.
